cereal box art

Okay, I've been working all weekend and I'm exhausted, but I wanted to get this out now.

Anyone who knows me knows my love of cereal. I used to write cereal reviews for a website called The Empty Bowl, and I used to always have a good stash of Cap'n Crunch or whatever gimmicky cereal happened to be out at the time. As I've grown older I've gravitated to healthier cereals, though occasionally I do crave just a giant bowl of Fruity Pebbles.

Back in 2004, one of my first blog posts was about the redesign of the Monster Cereal line of breakfast foods. This was the box at the time:

At the time, I was intrigued by the giant face, the name of the cereal in the lower region, and the overall dark pallette. Looking at it now, though, it seems a little too Saturday morning cartoon-ish. I found a few examples of the older box art HERE and you can see the devolution the Count.

Since that posting three years ago, I've grown a little indifferent to the monster cereals. I'd see them on display and show mild interest. But today I was at the grocery store and saw that the monster cereals were on display for Halloween and was immediately drawn to the new artwork.

Count Chocula with sticker
Okay, before I get into the art, who's the asshole that decided to slap a sticker on it? I've NEVER seen this done before, and they finally get a product that looks like a piece of retro art and they deface it with a coupon.

Count Chocula
That's better. So yeah, check that out. Compared to the 2004 box, it's museum worthy. It could have come from the 70s. The facial features are less extreme, yet more angular, and the muted colors are a great touch. And the font! Look at that font! Aside from the bullshit health benefits touted up top, it looks like an old box of cereal, and I think that's worthy of blogging.

They did up Franken Berry, too.
Frankenberry

Man, that's good stuff.
