idiocracy

Okay, so I stopped doing movie reviews many months ago, but I have a good reason to bring it back for today. A movie opened this weekend that most of the country isn't even aware of. It's called "Idiocracy" and it stars Luke Wilson & Maya Rudolph and was directed by Mike Judge.

Mike Judge. Creator of the subversive Beavis & Butthead....creator of the family friendly, but no less funny King of the Hill....and creator of one of the greatest underrated comedies of the 90's, "Office Space". He made a new movie for 20th Century Fox, but you wouldn't know it. It's only playing in 7 cities (three of which are in Texas). I never saw a poster or any ads for it. I don't think they even cut a trailer for the damn thing! The studio must have just taken a look at it and said, "What the hell is this?"

Well, what they have is a damn funny movie. Luke Wilson plays an average Joe (named Joe) in the military who gets put on an experiment to put him to sleep for a year. Due to complications, though, he remains in his chamber for 500 years. When he awakes in 2505, he finds that the world around him has devolved into stupidity. There are company logos everywhere, the most popular show on TV is "Ow! My Balls!", the president is an ex-wrestler/porn star, and people basically have a hard time functioning on any intellegence level. So now "average joe" finds himself to be the smartest person on the planet, and all he wants to do is get back to 2005.

The movie is really funny. Is it as funny as Office Space? Maybe not, but it has some hilarious moments and it's a real shame that the studio felt they had to bury it. It also looks like they made Judge re-edit a lot of it. There's a narration that feels a bit tacked on. What were they thinking?

It just pisses me off that these studios would spend so much money on a film and then bury it, not even letting people decide for themselves whether it's worthy of their time. So do yourself a favor. If this movie sounds interesting, go see if it's playing in your area and check it out.
